Maybe you’ve seen Bicycle Sport owner Ben Cooley out and about on the Colnago C60. Ben has had the opportunity to ride this incredible new carbon bike from Colnago over the last several weeks’ group rides, and then some. We were able to pry him from the handle bars long enough to get him to pen his personal impressions of the Colnago C60!
I don’t normally rave about any particular bike. I truly believe there are so many great bikes; each one having its own unique quality that makes it special, whether it’s a bike built for comfort to log lots of miles, or an all-out race rocket, ready to tear up the local group ride. There are many reasons why people buy a certain bike. Whether it’s the way it rides, how fast it feels, what color it is, and so on. But few bikes are purchased because of how they make you feel.
The Colnago C60 is one of those bikes. I recently had the chance to hop aboard one of our demos and put it through the paces. From the first pedal stroke I could tell there was something special about this bike. Most of you are accustomed to seeing me on my trusty steel road bike, which I can’t seem to let go of. It rides smooth stiff and solid. The Colnago C60 not only reflects these same qualities, but also packs all the positive attributes of being made of carbon fiber. On paper, there’s probably nothing that would typically make someone go, “Wow!” (Other than the price tag.) Weighting in at 1050 grams for the frame, it’s a good 200 to 300 grams heavier than most other companies’ flagship carbon models. And its tube-and-lug construction could be considered outdated. But there’s something going on here that’s way beyond all the data.
The construction method allows Colnago to tune the ride to exactly the way they want it. This also allows for a large selection of sizing which I really appreciate. The Colnago C60 is also the only full carbon frame that’s entirely handmade in Italy, not just assembled in Italy from carbon components made elsewhere. That’s just the start of the intangibles that make this bike so special. Once aboard the C60, something happens that I can’t quite put my finger on. It makes you want to ride faster and corner harder. It inspires a confidence that makes you feel giddy. You ride around with this grin that looks like you know something they don’t. Your friends might not understand, but it’s OK, I promise. Once you ride the C60, you’ll understand. Admittedly, this bike isn’t for everyone. If you’re the kind of cyclist who wakes up wondering whether today might be a good day to skip work and ride, then the Colnago C60 might be for you. Even if you’re the cyclist who doesn’t consider carbon to be the material of choice for “real” bikes, the C60 may speak to you, too. This bike defies categorization. The C60 isn’t all about long miles, fast corners, endurance, crit, or pure climbing. Rather, it’s the kind of bike that makes you want to hop on and never stop pedaling.
