Cycling shoes aren’t a subject to be taken lightly. Seriously. The right or wrong pair can literally make or break your ride. And when it comes to mountain bike shoes, comfort on AND off the bike are legit concerns. No, there’s no one shoe that’s perfect for every foot, but our man Michael met his match in the Giro Empire VR 90!
Touch points will make or break your ride. I’m talking about the points where your body contacts the bike. Splurge on that saddle, bib shorts, bars, tape and grips, gloves, socks and shoes. I have to make a confession: I’m really particular about the comfort of my feet. This makes finding the right pair of shoes and socks tough. But I think my feet found their forever home last summer when I bought a pair of the Giro Empire VR90’s. I admit at first I loved the look of the old school laces. I tried on a pair and felt like Cinderella going to the ball, the shoe fit like a slipper. I was concerned about switching to a lace up shoe. Like most of you, 10-15 minutes into a ride I usually tighten up the ratchet a click or two. But honestly only took me 2 rides to figure out how to tie them so I wasn’t having to retighten them 10 minutes into my ride. It has a 1 piece upper, very soft and no seams to irritate my piggies. The Easton EC90 carbon sole is very stiff, providing a great platform to put down some power to the pedals. Also if you’re doing any hike-a-bike the Vibram rubber tread will keep traction on those slippery wet rocks and roots.
Did I forget to mention they look amazing?
